Why Are Cats So Popular on the Internet?

I think that most of the answer to this question has to be based on opinion. So that said I'm going to go ahead straight away and offer one.

I think the cat's a bit aloof and independent nature makes it an enticing subject for riffing on.

Goodness knows we both love our dogs and our cats. In fact, the percentage of homes owning cats or dogs in the U.S., at least, is basically even these days. (Some statistics still place dog ownership at the forefront) And we spend more than $47 billion a year on our pets. We love our babies fluffy so yeah.

Yet in the case of cat and dog comedy cats tend to be the obvious winner.

A dog just seems to "think" something stupid ...... well ... natural. Overall they are just furry balls of slobbering silliness and we love them for it gosh-darn. So we like to think they 'd say dumb things, if they could chat.

Cats we imagine, on the other hand, are too calm , cool, and collected for such silliness. Silly seems to be ... well ... just plain rude to a cat. And when we add a stupid caption ... or catch them being less than aloof ... the humor factor is immediately up.

And the intense calm stare of a cat makes them the perfect foil for just about every sarcastic comment you might think about. Let's face it a dog just couldn't pull the sarcasm off. He would start to giggle about mid-sentence. And he would be rolling uncontrollably on his back guffawing to the end. (OK maybe it could be a French-cut poodle, but that's about it.)

Oh, and cats are rumored to be the pet of choice for the geek. And although this is statistically unproven, if it is true then it would make sense that their pet of choice would also populate the online world ... which tends to be somewhat dominated by geeks.
